Sustainable Classes and Activities in Ireland
Sustainability has become something we are mindful of in our everyday life in Ireland. We carry reusable coffee cups and shopping bags and are beginning to consider the option of repairing rather than replacing. The vast majority are making small choices to help reduce waste and protect the environment and what is interesting is how this mindset is now influencing the way people choose classes, activities and experiences too.
At Do Stuff! we’ve noticed more and more class and activity providers finding creative ways to deliver workshops in a more sustainable way, carefully designing their workshops with sustainability in mind, giving thought to the materials they use, how they source them and how they can be reused or repurposed rather than discarded.
These small decisions may seem simple on their own, but when made by hundreds of providers and embraced by thousands of participants, they have a meaningful impact. People attending classes increasingly value these choices, appreciating the opportunity to learn new skills in a way that aligns with their own values.
Arts and crafts tutors routinely use recycled materials and encourage participants to bring materials from home instead of buying everything new. Leftover fabric becomes quilting projects, old clothes are restyled, furniture is up styled, jars become candle holders, scrap paper is transformed into sketchbooks and art works. Imaginations are stimulated as children create a unique piece of art by repurposing recycled boxes, cardboard tubes and packaging, fabric fragments and bits of string that would otherwise end up in the recycling bin.
Across online learning too providers are finding thoughtful ways to reduce waste. Digital booking systems have replaced printed forms. Course notes are emailed instead of photocopied, ebooks and learning material is downloadable.
Outdoor activities naturally encourage people to value the environment around them. Walking groups, gardening clubs, nature workshops and wildlife organisations encourage greener options such as packed lunches and reusable bottles. Participants reconnect with local parks, forests, beaches and green spaces while learning how to be proactive in preserving natural environments for future generations.
One of the most encouraging things we see at Do Stuff! is how providers enjoy sharing ideas with one another. An idea from one instructor can inspire dozens of others and before long a small change that saves a little waste in one class is being repeated in classes all across Ireland.
It is easy to underestimate the value of these small actions, and reusing materials for one workshop might seem insignificant on its own. Choosing, for example, digital handouts instead of printed copies might save only a little paper each week but when hundreds or even thousands of classes across Ireland each make similar decisions, the combined impact becomes substantial.
Sustainability is about remembering to make better choices wherever we can and recognising that every contribution counts. Every provider who makes one positive change encourages others to think differently, creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond a single classroom.
At Do Stuff! we are inspired by the classes and activity providers who are finding practical, imaginative ways to reduce waste while creating fantastic and rewarding experiences for participants.
